Are Lab Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are authentic diamonds except that they are not naturally formed. Their similarity to natural diamonds is that the laboratories that make these diamonds replicate the same environmental conditions necessary to produce natural diamonds,  but in a controlled lab environment. Read on to understand lab-grown diamonds and why you should consider having one.

What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Also referred to as man-made, lab grown diamonds are diamonds that are similar to natural diamonds physically and structurally but are created in a laboratory by a chemical or pressure procedure.

How are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?

High-pressure synthesis methods are used in machines that use intense pressure and heat to simulate the Earth’s mantle to produce lab-grown diamonds. The seed is placed in a chamber of pure graphite carbon using the HPHT technique, and the chamber is then heated to a temperature of around 2732°F (1500°C). Additionally, the chamber is compressed to 1.5 million lbs per square inch, replicating the conditions deep inside the Earth’s crust. A new diamond crystal is formed under these conditions.

The second method of creating lab grown diamonds involves placing a seed diamond in a chamber that has been vaporized to about 1472°F (800°C) and is fed with carbon-rich gas such as methane, further broken down into atoms, for a process known as  chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The carbon atoms target the diamond crystal seed and the seed begins to grow layer by layer as a result of the tremendous heat and pressure in the chamber. This same heat and pressure also causes the diamond to undergo a color improvement

What is the Difference Between Lab Grown Diamonds and Natural Diamonds?

While it is extremely difficult to tell the difference with a naked eye, these two are different. The primary distinction would be that natural diamonds include minute levels of boron or nitrogen. Depending on the material, this might cause natural diamonds to have a yellow or blue tone. Additionally, the development morphology of lab-grown diamonds is influenced by laboratory conditions, while natural diamonds’ are dictated by natural forces.

Why Choose Lab Grown Diamonds?

Quality

Unlike many natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds are mostly pristine and of high quality. Due to the fact that they are created in a controlled environment, they have less defects and through heat treatment color is relatively easy to improve

Customizable

There is a lot more variety with lab-grown diamonds than with natural ones. You are able to determine the shape, carat, clarity and color of your diamond.

Traceability

When you invest in a lab-grown diamond you can be certain that it has a good clean history from a guaranteed source.

Environmental Friendly

The mining of natural diamonds can cause damage to the environment. The advantage with lab-grown diamonds is being sure that you have an environmentally friendly stone. Hence it is far more sustainable growing than mining.

Cost Advantage

Lab grown diamonds are a lot less costly than their equivalent natural mined counterparts.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Expensive?

You will be surprised to know that lab-grown diamonds are way more affordable than natural ones. For instance, A 3 carats, round-shaped natural diamond starts at $40,000. In contrast, a lab-grown diamond of the same size and quality starts at around $10,000.
